Would you like to be more effective in your goals and projects? We would all like to get into good habits so that we can be more effective in our work and in meeting our daily goals. Over 25 years of working in business relations and universities, Steven Covey noticed that many high achievers were not happy with their performance. In his profiling research for this answer, he read many self-help, motivational and psychological books and discovered that the problem lay in a misconception of the meaning of success away from happiness.
For this reason, in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People he compiles a guide of 7 characteristics that a person should develop in order to achieve success and greatness, and feel fullfilled by your achievements. Shall we tell you something? We have already read it for you and can summarize it with its most important points just for you. Check out these 7 habits to start this new year 2022 on the right foot!

Be Proactive
Covey’s first piece of advice is to be proactive. What does that mean? Stop waiting for opportunities to fall out of the sky, for things to magically work out or letting problems or obstacles hold you back. Take the initiative when these situations arise and instead of waiting for the world to do it, be proactive. Take responsibility for your actions and your life, to stop blaming what is around you. Own your decisions and take responsibility for those consequences without suffering, looking for the solution.
Begin with the End in Mind
No, it doesn’t mean that you have to think about how things will end, but something simpler. This point is about not losing sight of three key things: how you want to be, what you want to achieve and what values you will not give up. For this Covey has you immerse yourself in your own funeral. How would you like people to remember you? What achievements would you like them to highlight? Will you come to the end of your life feeling that you competed with everything and that you didn’t neglect what is most important? Don’t wait until it’s really the end of your life to ask yourself this question. Start thinking about it now and work on refining your character, taking small steps to achieve your goals and living according to your values. If you are guided by your principles, you will have a better worldview that will lead you right to accomplish what you set out to do.
Put first things first
This point is about developing an independent will. What is that? Having effective self-management so that you are able to make your own decisions and take action on them. This works on being whole and keeping your commitments to others and to yourself. Act guided by yourself by putting first those things that are paramount and non-negotiable: your principles and values. how do you do that? ensure that your time is spent on actions that are guided by your principles, focused on awareness and try to organise them weekly to move towards your goals.
Think win/win
Win/win thinking is not a strategy, it is a philosophy of human interaction. and what does it mean? To stop seeing others as competition but as cooperation. It seeks that we see in all agreements, relationships, or dealings with others that there is a benefit for both. To develop this way of thinking Covey recommends that we work on 5 dimensions: character, relationships, agreements, win/win and processes. First, strengthen character to realise that there is room for everyone and that the success of others is not a threat to my own personal success. Emphasise that the basis of any relationship is trust and that for good personal and working relationships it is important to reach agreements. Reinforce that the help and success of others can be a way to grow in my own self and seek that the processes in which we participate benefit both parties.
Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Did you listen well? it is time to develop a very important skill: the art of listening. We often hear about the importance of communicating what we think and we think it is very good, but Covey does not recommend that before we speak our mind, we should listen to what others have to say. Not only do we learn and get to know others better when we are truly interested in what they have to say, but we build real and lasting relationships. To communicate and express your character you don’t need to tell everyone how incredible your personal journey is, that is what your actions convey. don’t waste your words on saying what your concrete actions can show and take advantage of these opportunities to give yourself to others and listen to what they have to contribute or express. in this way you will be able to concentrate more with those around you, which is what really makes us h
Learn to synergize
To reach a balance between mental, emotional, and psychological differences between a group of people. Yes, as you heard, that’s synergy! It is not about giving up your principles but learning to lead effectively without giving up your core values while respecting and valuing those of others. This allows you to reach maximum productivity in work, team building and relationships with others who may be directed towards different life goals but work together to achieve the same goal.
Sharpen the saw
The end focuses on you: to sharpen the four dimensions that make up your person. Don’t neglect the physical part by exercising, eating healthy and getting the rest. You need to be well, feel good and for accomplishing your goals! Connect with your social and emotional part which includes the development of empathy, service and synergy, because we will only be truly happy if we are willing to serve and have good relationships with those around us. Don’t lose sight of your spiritual side, the core that allows you to connect with your personal values and principles. Finally, do not neglect your mental development by incorporating productive skills such as reading, writing, organising and planning that will allow you to achieve all those big goals you set for yourself.
