Black Widow is the newest film of the MCU and was released a few days ago. We were expecting this movie since forever – after a several months delay – and we wonder if it’s worth it. Why? Well, because it’s a female solo movie in a universe full of male hero’s movies and it’s a goodbye film for Scarlett Johansson.
Cate Shortland is the film director and she delivers a new camera style in this case. She’s more used to indie films and the whole movie shows this through it’s camera. This doesn’t mean the action isn’t on point, the action sequences are incredible – chef kiss. However, the film follows it’s own formula and, though we appreciate the change, some people might find it bad.
The movie is about Natasha Romanoff’s childhood, how she turns into an assassin and later, a heroine. We feel a little bad to be the ones to point this, but her character development isn’t the best. Yes, you will meet her family and see how dysfunctional they are, but overall, we know more about Natasha because we saw her before.
Knowing what we mentioned and that the plot happens between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, make the film feel slow. In other words, this film feels like an introduction to the character, rather than a goodbye film. Anyways, is cool to get to the history behind the “widows”, we will talk more about this.
What we think, overall
We won’t give you any spoilers, so when Natasha finally meets Deykrov and Yelena – played by Florence Pugh – the film gets better. Natasha wants to stop the widow program and, to do this, she meets her “dad”, Deykrov –played by David Harbour. We won’t tell you more about the plot than this, but the film gets a better rhythm from here.
Florence Pugh and Scarlett Johansson have amazing chemistry on screen, making them a great combo. With this being said, we have big expectations for Yelena, she is charismatic, funny, and a very good character overall. After the family introduction and getting to know a little about Black Widow’s past, the film centers on the villain.
This change is well received but, it is what it is, we don’t get to know more about Black Widow. This is the reason why we feel this isn’t what we expected, we learned just a little about the character, but she’s the same. We get to know her more in the previous films, so we don’t feel like this is her solo movie.
Other than what we said, the movie is fine. The action sequences are amazing, and the script is pretty good. This isn’t the worst MCU movie but is not a great movie, is an OK movie in the universe. Disclaimer: This is our opinion; you might think is better or worse, but we can all agree that the fighting scene in the air, chef kiss.
