On at least two previous occasions, most recently in February at a street food stall, Whitty has been chased and harassed with cries of “liar” by protesters against the containment measures. His number two, Jonathan Van-Tam, has also been confronted by a group of anti-vaccine activists outside the Ministry of Defence.
As Chief Medical Officer for England in the COVID-19 pandemic, Chris Whitty has divided some: He is regarded with admiration and respect. But he has been questioned and even attacked for his advocacy and guidance on the immunisation scheme in England.
Earlier this week, Dr Whitty was subjected to street harassment when two men approached him, pushed him, and forcibly tried to take pictures with him, reports The Sun.
As that happened, a video circulating on the internet shows the UK government’s top health adviser trying to escape.
The video online shows the incident in St James’s Park. Officers spoke to all those involved at the time and are still investigating the circumstances.
Scotland Yard has taken the matter into its own hands and has opened an investigation to determine who is responsible. “We are aware of the video of the incident in St James’s Park,” a police statement said. “Our officers have Our officers have interviewed those responsible and are in contact with the victim while the full circumstances continue to be investigated”.
Many may wonder why the vaccines minister continues to go out unescorted, given that he has been the victim of several attacks already. Members of anti-vaccine groups also took part in a similar act of violence.
