When we form a deep bond with a character in a series or film, we can come to feel that everything that happens to them is as if it were happening to our own family or even to us. There is no doubt that we often get so hooked on a series or become a fan of a film that we end up bonding in a unique way with the plot and the characters. For that reason, when our favourite character dies, it can leave us with the feeling that they deserved so much more.
This is the list of characters whose death left us with great pain:
Table of Contents
Gwen Stacy (The Amazing Spiderman)
Ohh, our dear Gwen, her death hurt many people, and to this day, they still remember it as one of the saddest moments of the Spiderman movie. Any fan of our friendly neighbour Spidey has felt Peter’s pain and guilt. We know that Gwen was one of the great loves of Peter Parker’s life, a relationship that many loved but that came to an end because of Gwen’s tragic death in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The scene where she falls in slow motion as Peter throws his web catches her, but it is too late, was truly pure suffering for all viewers. And you, how much did the death of this character hurt you?
Guido (La Vita E Bella)
La Vita E Bella will always be one of the most memorable films, not only for its hopeful tone throughout but also for its moving and unforgettable ending. You can’t deny that Guido became one of your most beloved characters because of the way he saw life despite the circumstances he was in. When the war broke out, he, his wife and his son were interned in an extermination camp, where Guido did everything he could to make his son believe that the terrible situation they were going through was just a game. I’m sure you were also moved to tears by his death. He was a character who deserved a better ending because of his great nobility and pure love for his family.
Dobby (Harry Potter)
Ohh, yes, remembering this one will hurt Harry Potter fans, so brace yourselves. One factor that makes Dobby’s death exceptionally heartbreaking is his innocence. Dobby died like Lily and James, trying to protect Harry from a Death Eater. And what makes it even more tragic is that we must remember that in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, he frees Dobby by handing Malfoy Tom Riddle’s Diary with one of his socks inside it. Not knowing about the sock, Malfoy gives the diary to Dobby to carry, and when Dobby finds the sock, he was free. Dobby then asks Harry how he might repay his kindness. Harry only asks Dobby to promise never to try to save his life again.
However, we know that Dobby later dies in Deathly Hallows Part 1 for helping Harry and other members of Dumbledore’s Army escape from Malfoy Manor. An act of nobility that only Dobby could do for a great friend.
Emma (One Day)
There is genuinely nothing that hurts more than the death of a character who deserved to continue living their love story. Emma and Dexter’s story began when they met for the first time on their college graduation. For a time, their friendship faced several adversities. After about 20 years, Emma and Dexter finally decide to start a relationship and get married. However, when everything seemed to be going well, an unexpected turn of events occurred. Emma is hit by a bus and dies, and Dexter collapses again. A scene that indeed left everyone’s mouth open because no one expected it.
Special Mention: Iron Man (Avengers: Endgame)
This is considered one of the most iconic moments in Marvel movies. And while I think everyone agrees that Tony Stark’s death was necessary, it hurt all of our souls. Iron Man was the one who sacrificed himself to defeat Thanos using the Infinity Gauntlet. In the final fight, he snatches the new gauntlet with which the first snap was undone and uses it to kill Thanos. We know that Tony is human, without superpowers, so he dies consumed by the energy of the gems like the hero he has always been. It is one of the Marvel franchise’s saddest and most iconic moments, as the vast majority of its fans had a great affection for this character.
We love you 3000, Tony.
We hope we have not made you cry too much remembering these painful deaths as you read this article that opens wounds anew. Even if it hurts, we know that deep down, these characters will still have our affection for giving us the best moments in our lives.
